“Boston Billy” Rodgers
Bill Rodgers, born and raised in Connecticut, is known to serious road racers as “Boston Billy” Rodgers for his domination of the famed Boston Marathon (which he won four times, the first time—in 1975—in an American record time). He moved to Boston and has been an institution there for decades, where he trains and runs the Bill Rodgers Running Center in the North Market Building of the famed Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
During one period at the height of his career, he won 22 road races in a row, everything from the 10K to the marathon, earning him the nickname of “King of the Roads.” Although there has always been a serious competition between Boston and New York City, “Boston Billy” dominated marathons in both cities, winning the New York City Marathon four times. He is the author of Marathoning (1980) with legendary Boston newpaperman Joe Concannon. Billy continues to run and race and work as an ambassador of the sport of long-distance running.
